The Shire of Northampton has rejected a proposal to pursue funding for a monument to mark cyclone Seroja, instead suggesting monies be donated to the refurbishment of Kalbarri’s war memorial.

On Friday councillors considered the idea — put forward by the Australian Business Enterprise Centre — of applying for a grant worth about $10,000 to construct the monument.

The money would be distributed from the ABEC’s residual funds following the closure of one of its centres of operation.

A board of five members would decide which projects would be allocated funding later this year, and there was no certainty as to whether the monument would be approved.

Shire chief executive Garry Keeffe described the request as “bizarre” and believed funding a memorial would not be appropriate.
