Mystery surrounds Cape Burney bus bay murals in Banksy-style pop-up artworks

Cape Burney may have its very own Banksy.

Murals have been appearing on the bus stop shelter on Greenough River Road, much to the delight of residents.

But who put them there remains a mystery.

The first mural appeared in late September, with an eccentric emu greeting any approaching bus driver. A few weeks later, a cross-eyed kangaroo appeared on the opposite side.

The most recent addition covers the whole inside wall facing the road with a speeding fire truck — and old man emu in tow.

The paintings have no signatures, or any defining markings. A spokesman from the Public Transport Authority said the organisation had “no involvement with (the bus shelter), their maintenance or decoration.”

The City of Greater Geraldton, which is responsible for the shelter, also denied it had any part in the artwork’s appearance.

One Facebook commenter, who claims to know the artists, said it was the work of a local couple, perhaps alluded to by the writing on the fire truck — Cape Burney 2 4U. He also claimed they were responsible for other works in town “you would not know about.”

One side of the shelter is yet to be painted. It’s anyone’s guess as to what may appear there in the coming weeks.
