Historic ore consignment departs
The Pan African sailed from Geraldton Port with the historic first shipment of iron ore from GWR Group’s new Wiluna mine yesterday morning.
The China-bound vessel had actually left Geraldton last month but was obliged to return after a surging swell and maintenance issues cut the trip short.
The 30,000 tonnes cargo had to be topped up to an optimum 55,000 tonnes before the Marshall Islands registered bulk carrier was considered safe to leave port.
Geraldton contractor QEM transported the lump iron ore to the port from Wiluna, using its new transfer facility in Narngulu.
