Geraldton’s Jy Thurstun and Liam Meharry represent WA with distinction at U23 national softball championships

Suiside teammates Liam Meharry and Jy Thurstun earned All Stars selection for their form during the softball Under-23 Men’s National Championships representing WA. The pair have spent years developing their game side by side in Geraldton. While Thurstun is currently based in Perth, playing regularly in multiple sports, his sporting roots are firmly planted in the Mid West, and he remains very much a product of the Geraldton system. The pair lined up for WA at the Laing Harrow Shield, held at Redlands Softball Association in Queensland from February 3-8 and showed they belong among the State’s best. WA had a strong start to the tournament, winning four of their first five games to secure a semifinal berth against Queensland. Their campaign came to an end in the semifinal, with WA going down 8-2 in a hard-fought contest, but the result did little to overshadow an impressive week. The WA squad finished the championships in third place overall. Meharry and Thurstun were recognised for their performances with selection in the tournament’s All Stars Team. Thurstun was named at shortstop, while Meharry earned selection in left field and they were the only two WA players named in the squad. The Geraldton Softball Association praised the duo for representing WA and the local softball community with pride. For Suiside, it was another reminder of the depth of talent produced within the club, and for Geraldton softball more broadly, proof that strong local pathways and years of hard work still count.
