A Gascoyne wildlife tourism business has taken out a top gong at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards at the weekend.

Live Ningaloo was awarded a gold medal in the awards’ ecotourism category, with Fremantle Prison and Busselton’s Tree Chalets also receiving gold honours.

Based in Exmouth, Live Ningaloo gives tourists the opportunity to get up close and personal with the unique wildlife found along the Ningaloo Reef.

State Tourism Minister Roger Cook accepted the gold award on behalf of the business, saying Live Ningaloo was “one of just 15 companies licensed to bring the extraordinary Ningaloo Reef to tourists across the world”.

“These awards are further proof that Western Australia is well and truly open for tourism and open for business,” he said.

The awards ceremony was held in Queensland on Sunday, with WA businesses specialising in cultural tourism, adventure tourism, food experiences and festivals and events receiving 12 medals on the night.

It comes as Tourism WA prepares to expand its Wander Out Yonder campaign with a $12 million multimedia strategy on the East Coast across television, digital, print, outdoor, radio and social media.

This is part of the $195m million Reconnect WA package to attract tourists, workers, students, events and investment in WA.
