City of Greater Geraldton to continue to ask for improvements to Geraldton-Mt Magnet Road amid truck rollover

The City of Greater Geraldton says it will continue to lobby the State Government for safety improvements to Geraldton-Mt Magnet Road, after a truck rollover earlier this week. On Tuesday afternoon, a road train carrying several carriages of iron ore lost control while travelling on Geraldton-Mt Magnet Road. Police said although the front cab was able to stay upright, some carriages rolled over causing debris to spread onto the road. The eastbound lane was blocked on the day as a result, with speeds reduced to 40km/h. City mayor Jerry Clune said the council would again lobby the State Government for road safety improvements. “The City of Greater Geraldton has been aware of the dilapidated state of the Geraldton-Mt Magnet Road for some time and has made numerous representations to Main Roads and the State Government to address the issues that affect this vital transport corridor,” he said. The concerns will be at the “forefront” of discussions when Mr Clune meets with Transport Minister Rita Saffioti later this month. “The city urges drivers to take care especially when travelling on regional roads,” the mayor said. Safety issues at Geraldton-Mt Magnet Road have been flagged in the past, with an Infrastructure WA report indicating $225 million would be required to repair the road. The report said safety suggestions included widening the road from 8m to 10m, adding or extending 15 overtaking lanes, and general repairs to conditions, among others. A Main Roads spokesperson said no crashes had been reported at the site of Tuesday’s rollover in the five years to the end of 2023. She said major pavement repairs took place in April, while more than 70km of road has undergone safety treatments through the Regional Road Safety Program.
