Geraldton-based 30 Knots Distillery has achieved international glory, bringing home gold for its spirits in one of the world’s most prestigious spirits competitions.
Owners Kelly and Murray Killen entered the San Francisco World Spirits Competition for the first time this year and was recently awarded two medals.
The golden winner was their Sea Spray Gin, which was awarded double gold, which is extremely rare. Double gold is only awarded when every judge on the panel awards a spirit a gold medal in a blind tasting. With more than 70 judges involved, 30 Knots Distillery has made Geraldton proud.
30 Knots’ first-ever rum release was also in the limelight, being awarded gold with a score of 94 out of 100.
Ms Killen said: “As a small regional distillery, we don’t create spirits for awards, but they provide an important benchmark and valuable feedback from respected industry professionals. Recognition like this gives us confidence that what we’re producing here in Geraldton can stand alongside some of the best spirits in the world.”
Ms Killen also revealed that there was more news to come from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, although she was unable to share the details due to competition requirements.
Only three years into their distillery journey, Ms Killen said: “I honestly feel like we’re just getting started.”
She recognised the role that Geraldton has played in its successes.
“Geraldton has shaped every part of our business — from the 30 Knots name inspired by our famous winds, to our award-winning bottle design and the spirits we craft. To have something made here recognised on the international stage is pretty special,” Ms Killen said.
