A Victorian town has been left questioning how the body of a kangaroo was found tied up and decapitated on the street.

The gruesome discovery was made by the town’s animal management team during a routine street clean on Winter St in Ballarat on August 1.

The animal’s legs were tied up with an orange rope and its head was removed.

The eastern grey roo is believed to have died anywhere from 12-24 hours before discovery.

Investigators told ABC news they had no information about who might have left the animal on the street and urged members of the public with information to come forward.

“It is distressing,” they said.

“We do respond from time to time where we have had reports of kangaroos that have been killed or injured, and they are not always as a result of traffic accidents."

In Victoria, it is illegal to harm wildlife, with maximum penalties of more than $92,000 or two years’ imprisonment.
