A man has been transferred to Joondalup Hospital after suffering a shark bite north of Lancelin.

On Sunday about 3pm, while windsurfing the man was bitten on the ankle by a shark at Wedge Island.

The 46-year-old is in a stable condition as he remains in hospital.

The species of the shark is unknown.

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development are currently working with local authorities to coordinate a response.

The WA Government is urging beachgoers to adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA.

The last shark attack near Wedge Island occurred in 2012 where a man was killed by a 4m great white.

Ben Linden, 24, had risen early to go surfing with his friend but never made it back to shore.

WA has followed a trend of increasing shark bite incidents reported, with the yearly average from 1990 to 2000 being 1.5; 2001 to 2009 being four and 2010-2020 being six.
