A head-on collision between two cars near Zieleniec in southwestern Poland has killed six people, police say.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at an intersection of two major roads near the village, a police spokesman was quoted as saying by Polish news agency PAP.

Five people died in one of the cars when it caught fire after the collision, a spokesman for the fire brigade said.

The driver of the other car was also killed.

According to the emergency services, all the vehicle occupants died at the scene.

Their identities have yet to be established.

Polish authorities urged drivers to exercise caution on account of icy conditions as temperatures dropped below 0C, with roads expected to be busy due to Christmas holiday traffic.
