Nick Campo: Cook Government backs ‘Call out for Nick’ campaign ahead of road safety summit

A powerful plea by a grieving father to call out bad behaviour on the roads after his teenage son was killed in a devastating crash has won the backing of the Cook Government. The West Australian can reveal the government will support the family of Nick Campo in their “Call out for Nick” road safety campaign, launched by his grieving parents in the days after the 18-year-old’s death. It comes as Premier Roger Cook and the State’s major road safety stakeholders prepare to meet for an emergency summit to address WA’s horror road toll on Monday. Nick Campo had been celebrating his 18th birthday before he was killed in a car crash in North Lake on July 13. The 17-year-old driver, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is facing a manslaughter charge over his death. Just five days after the fatal crash, the teenager’s father Daniel Campo vowed he would dedicate the rest of his life to raising awareness among young people to become better motorists. The Road Safety Commission has agreed to work closely with Mr Campo as he fulfils his mission to travel to schools and sporting clubs across the State to share his story with young people. Mr Campo wants young drivers to have the confidence to “call out” bad behaviour on WA roads and for safer driver behaviour to become an enduring legacy of his son. “I want to make sure other families don’t go through what we’re going through,” Mr Campo said. “If I can convince even one young person to rethink the choices they are making on the roads, it could save a life.” Road Safety Minister David Michael said he was “deeply moved” to see Mr Campo channelling his grief into saving lives. “No parent should have to go through the loss of a child on our roads as Mr Campo has done, but sadly, so many do,” he said. “I met with Mr Campo recently and was deeply moved by his story and compelled by his passion for preventing further death and serious injury on WA roads. “The Government is eager to support Mr Campo in this campaign in any way we can.” When first detailing the campaign, Mr Campo said he wanted to encourage young people to call out bad decisions. He said everyone needed to “double-check” what drivers were doing. “Double-check everything wherever they’re going, if there’s too many kids in the car, call it out,” he said. “Call these things out ... if it doesn’t look right, if that person doesn’t look right to drive, or their habits are bad, it’s got to be called out. “Again, it’s the importance of the decisions when you get in the car, and are looking out for others and calling people out.” The death of a 79-year-old man on Great Central Road in Ngaanyatjarra-Giles, near Warakurna, on Saturday has pushed WA’s road toll to 121 — the worst death rate in almost a decade. The soaring toll — which include the deaths of a three-year-old girl in a Pilbara rollover and a mother and her baby in Yalgoo — prompted Mr Cook to call a meeting of road safety experts on Monday to consider “new and innovative ways” to tackle the high toll. Mr Campo will give an opening speech at the event. Other attendees include Police Minister Paul Papalia, Road Safety Minister David Michael, emergency services and the University of Western Australia’s Centre for Road Safety Research. Premier Roger Cook said even one death was one too many and “all parts of Government were working to make our roads safer”. “I have called this road safety roundtable in response to this year’s road toll, and am looking forward to hearing fresh ideas about what else we can do to tackle the issue,” he said.
