A 37-year-old road worker is fighting for life after being struck by a car in Silver Sands overnight.

The man is in a serious but stable condition at Royal Perth Hospital after a Toyota Camry travelling south on Mandurah Road struck him about 9pm.

The out-of-control Camry then continued on, ploughing into a street sweeper before coming to a stop near Watersun Drive.

It is understood the driver was trapped inside the wreck for some time before firefighters were able to free him.

He and his male passenger suffered numerous injuries and both were taken to RPH by St John Ambulance.

Road workers continued their work following the crash.

Police from the traffic enforcement group are investigating the circumstances behind the crash.
