Firefighters are at the scene of a massive blaze at a tyre recycling facility in Welshpool this morning.

The fire began shortly before 3.30am at a warehouse on Fargo Way, sending huge plumes of thick, black smoke 20 metres into air.

Firefighters are working to stop the blaze spreading to nearby buildings.

Witnesses told 7NEWS Perth they heard up to five explosions before the fire broke out.

Fargo Way and Felspar Street are closed and people near the fire are being told to stay indoors away from the smoke.

The cause of the blaze is unknown but members of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services hazardous materials investigators will arrive at the scene later this morning.
