Boatie 70, dies and another treated for hypothermia after vessel overturns off Jindalee beach in Perth’s north

A man has died and another is recovering in hospital after a boat overturned in waters in Perth’s north on Tuesday. The water emergency started about 6.45am after a vessel got into distress just under 3km from Jindalee beach. It is understood a civilian boat helped transfer a critically injured 70-year-old to the Mindarie Marina Boat ramp after he was thrown into the water. Witnesses told The West that the man was given CPR by waiting paramedics before he was declared dead on the water’s edge. It is believed two members of the public, who helped bring the man to shore, also gave the man first aid. Another man, 72, was also thrown into the water and taken to the same boat ramp by the civilian boat. He has been admitted to Joondalup Health Campus and is being treated for hypothermia. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The RAC Rescue helicopter landed at the marina carpark but was not needed. The overturned boat, from which the men were believed to be pulling cray pots, has not been recovered with conditions at sea too dangerous. “Water Police have sighted the vessel and have advised the Department of Transport of a possible shipping hazard,” a WA Police spokeswoman said. One boatie, who had been pulling cray pots, said conditions in the water were “challenging” with swells reaching at least 2.4m. “There are some boats out there that I wouldn’t take out,” he said. “There are a lot of guys with cray pots ... it wouldn’t take much to tip a boat over. “We saw the chopper searching for the vessel. The ambulances turned up as we launched our boat.” It follows another boating accident in Mindarie on Monday night. A 5.5m half-cabin boat capsized out from the Mindarie Marina, about 1.5km offshore from Claytons Beach. Three men aboard, two men in their 50s and one in his 20s, were forced to sit on the hull of the overturned vessel where they activated an EPIRB. Another boat from the marina picked up the men, who were not hurt, returning them to shore by 5.20pm. Earlier on Monday, a 21m boat caught fire off Cottesloe Beach. Two people aboard were taken safely back to Fremantle. Premier Roger Cook said the string of boating accidents served an important reminder that “the ocean can be dangerous”. “I know it’s great to get out on the water, I know it’s great to take people out on the water with you, but you need to continue to make sure you can do everything to keep yourself safe,” he said Mr Cook said he wished the survivor “all the very best in their recovery” when asked about Tuesday’s boating death.
