A person and their dog are believed to have been swept away in a creek in Victoria's east.

Police are searching for the duo and trying to confirm the person's identity after they were seen falling into Traralgon Creek early on Monday morning.

A witness saw the person, who was walking their small dog along Whittakers Road, appear to roll up their trousers near the bank of the swollen creek about 5.30am.

The witness believes the pair were then swept away, but police have been unable to confirm as much.

After searching the area and making a number of local enquiries, they have appealed for anyone in the community who has information about the incident to come forward.
