A man was kidnapped and burned in Melbourne in what police believe may be a case of extortion.

Police raided a home in Cranbourne on Thursday morning as part of an investigation into multiple incidents including other kidnappings and extortions.

It includes a kidnapping in early May where a male victim received what police describe as "distinctive burns" to his body.

Investigators initially believed the man had been kidnapped and taken to a park, but now understand he was taken to a house where he was held captive and seriously assaulted for several hours before being released.

Police are looking at whether it may be connected to drug trafficking.
