A driver who fled the scene of a collision after being briefly pursued by police on Monday night is still on the run.

Police first spotted the grey Holden Commodore station sedan on Belgravia Street in Cloverdale, east of Perth, about 9.45pm.

Officers pursued the car briefly but say the chase was abandoned out of concern for public safety.

About three kilometres away, the Commodore collided with a small black car at the intersection of Abernethy Road and Leach Highway.

Fortunately its occupants were not injured.
