Footage has captured the moment a man dodged death and was left seriously injured following a hit-and-run outside a suburban shopping centre.

The incident took place in the car park of a Mickleham shopping centre on Donnybrook Road, in Melbourne's north, shortly before 7.30pm on Monday.

The pedestrian, a 34-year-old local man dressed in hi-vis workwear, was crossing a narrow lane when a grey Mitsubishi accelerated towards him.

CCTV footage released by Victoria Police on Tuesday shows the man hesitating, before attempting to run as the vehicle enters the frame.

The video jumps forward just as the vehicle closes in on him, after speeding through a pedestrian crossing and barrelling over a small speed bump.

It resumes as the Mitsubishi attempts to overtake another commuter on its way out of the car park, abandoning the badly injured 34-year-old.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police hope someone recognises the vehicle or its driver, a man who they say appeared to be Caucasian and wearing a green, fluorescent top.

Detectives are investigating whether the two men are known to one another.

It was the second serious road incident recorded in the area in as many days.

About 5.45pm on Sunday, a boy was left with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a car on Donnybrook Road.

The 15-year-old was riding a bike when he was struck by a white Hyundai.

He was taken to hospital in serious condition.

Police are continuing to investigate after speaking to the female driver at the scene.
