Victoria has recorded two new locally acquired cases on Friday, on the day the state is preparing to ease coronavirus restrictions.

The state’s health department confirmed zero new infections in returned travellers hotel quarantine.

The results came after more than 16,500 Victorians were tested in the past 24 hours.

The health department said the number of active cases was 17, made up of 11 locally acquired cases and six cases in hotel quarantine.

The health department said the new local cases were primary close contacts of “pre-existing” cases and had been quarantining during their infectious period.

The fresh locally acquired cases come after six straight days of no new coronavirus infections in Victoria.

There are also two COVID-19 patients in hospital in Victoria.

More details on Friday’s new cases are expected at Premier Daniel Andrews’ press conference later in the day.

The Premier has said Victoria was “well-placed” for an easing of coronavirus restrictions on Friday, which is expected to include the relaxing of mask rules and allowing more visitors to private homes.

“(Friday) is the 14th day from the most recent cases when they first became most infectious,” Mr Andrews said.

“I think we can be quite positive about making some announcements.

“That’s a testament to the effort of Victorians and how to stay the course to get this job done.”
