Community enjoyment will be a large focus of this year’s CinefestOz film festival, with an extensive array of free screenings set to take place across the South West.

Playing host to four films and the Cinesnaps Short Film Competition finalists in Bunbury, Busselton, Dunsborough, Margaret River and Augusta, the popular community screenings event is set to be a highlight of the week-long festival.

Titled Expecting the Unexpected, the two-day event will reflect unexpected successes, events or stories.

Community manager Gabrielle Whirledge said the community focus segment aimed to immerse locals in the film festival in a fun and affordable way.

“What we’ve found in previous years is people love the idea of viewing films in places other than the cinema,” she said.

“By doing the screenings in this way, we are also able to give local businesses in each town the opportunity to join in the festivities.

“I also think it’s a good chance for community groups and clubs to gather and enjoy a free film together, make an outing of it.”

Cinesnap Short Film finalists’ creations will be the heroes of day one of the community event, showing three to five-minute films created by teenage film buffs exploring the theme of Treasure.

Other highlights of the event will include director Nadia Tass’ comedy Malcolm, a story of adventure and unlikely friendship, as well as Warwick Thornton’s dramatic romance Samson and Delilah, exploring young Aboriginal love in the Australian desert.

The event will be held alongside a stimulating program of short films, documentaries, industry workshops and other related events over the five-day annual festival.

Dunsborough’s community screenings will start at 10am on August 27 at the Dunsborough Country Club, while Busselton buffs can see the free screenings from 9.30am on August 28 at The Esplanade Hotel.
