Fire crews have brought under control a large factory fire in Melbourne's inner north.

More than 60 firefighters were called to the blaze in Brunswick East just after 1pm on Thursday.

Thick plumes of dark smoke issued from the fire for several hours.

"Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters attacked the blaze and worked to protect neighbouring properties," a Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said.

The John Street blaze was deemed under control at 2.40pm.

An advice message remains in place with residents warned smoke may be visible in the area for some time.
