The distraught caretaker of a cavoodle mauled to death by a pair of pit bulls has spoken of how the horror unfolded.

Patrick Crisostomo, from Westmeadows in Melbourne’s north, said the scene involving his pooch Kevy and two off-leash pit bulls unfolded at Moonee Ponds Creek Trail last Thursday.

“I was trying to call triple-0 during the mauling which was difficult because my hands were bloodied from the dog bites,” he told Sunrise.

“Around that time (the pit bulls’ owner) appeared and he literally just stood nearby, did nothing and when I noticed he was there I directly addressed him.

“I was begging him to please help me. I said they were biting me, they’re killing my dog and he just stood there and did nothing.”

Mr Crisostomo said the other dogs’ owner eventually subdued them with a blue stick and then “literally just walked away from the scene” despite seeing the carnage caused.

Police are now investigating “beloved” 15-year-old Kevy’s death. His owners, Mr Crisostomo’s relatives, remain overseas.

Mr Crisostomo suffered injuries that later required stitches to his leg and upper body.

The 30-year-old told police the owner of the two dogs attempted to hit them with a stick to stop the attack before fleeing the scene without assisting him or Kevy.

Family members have subsequently taken to social media to slam the owner for running away and are now appealing to the public to help them track him down.

“We lost our beloved cavoodle, Kevy, to a violent dog attack in Broadmeadows which has resulted in a family member suffering serious injuries,” Kevy’s owner said.

“We are doing our best to identify the offending owner who did nothing and fled the scene with his two attacker dogs.”

They fear the man’s dogs may strike again unless something is done.

“My nephew‘s beloved cavoodle Kevy was mauled to death by two dogs last Thursday evening in Westmeadows and he himself was bitten badly, and the owner ran away,” the victim’s uncle said.

“Help us find and charge the irresponsible man and his ferocious dogs before it happens again to other innocent lives.”

The man who was with the two dogs was perceived to be Middle Eastern in appearance with a medium build, approximately 175cm tall, aged in his late 30s, with short dark hair. He was wearing a brown jacket.

The two dogs, one black and the other brown and white, were described as short and stocky with a medium build and coarse hair.

The family believes they could possibly be pit bulls.

Investigators have released an image of the owner’s stick that was left at the scene.

Police are looking for witnesses who were around the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail area at the time or anyone who can help identify the owner and his two dogs.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
