The father of a three-month-old baby boy who died from significant internal injuries has been identified as 28-year-old Uneeb Ullah.

Mr Ullah has been charged with the domestic violence murder of his infant son after the baby died in Queensland Children’s Hospital on Tuesday.

Queensland Police launched an investigation after the baby was taken to Ipswich Hospital with serious injuries on October 1.

Police said the child had suffered “significant internal injuries” and was later transferred to Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.

The baby was placed on life support before dying five days after he was first admitted to hospital.

Detective Inspector Michael Manago said Ullah and his son were allegedly the only two people at home when the incident occurred, and the father took the baby to hospital.

Hospital staff then contacted police because of the nature of the infant’s injuries.

“Our thoughts are with this young boy’s family and their friends in what is an unimaginably difficult time for them,” Det Insp Manago said.

“Any death is devastating but the death involving a young and vulnerable member of the community is particularly tragic.”

Police said the baby’s mother and father were in a relationship at the time and did not have any other children.

Det Insp Manago said the boy’s mother was “extremely upset” and “struggling”, with police offering her support.

Detectives from the Ipswich Child Protection Investigation Unit, assisted by the Child Trauma Unit, arrested Ullah at his Ipswich home on Tuesday night.

He has since been charged with one count of domestic violence murder and remains in custody after his case was briefly heard in Brisbane Arrests Court on Wednesday.

Mr Ullah did not appear in person for the hearing.

Police said investigators had been gathering evidence before the baby died, with his death leading to Ullah’s arrest. Further charges have not been ruled out.

Det Insp Manago described the investigation as “incredibly confronting and difficult”, particularly because it involved such a young child.

“Our thoughts are also with hospital staff and all the other police that have been involved in this incredibly tragic event,” he said.

“It’s an incredibly confronting and difficult investigation as you can imagine, anything involving the young and vulnerable members of the community are always hard to investigate and deal with, the investigators have been nothing but professional, I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

Police said investigations into the baby’s death remain ongoing.
