Almost 30 per cent of RSPCA surrender requests due to cost of living crisis, with some feeding pets Weetbix

Almost 30 per cent of surrender requests to the RSPCA have been attributed to cost-of-living pressures, with some people even resorting to feeding their pets Weetbix in a bid to keep spending down. RSPCA WA said they had received 301 surrender requests in the 2024-25 financial year from pet owners who couldn’t afford pet care, had become homeless or were moving to a new home that did not allow pets. The animal welfare organisation currently has a six-month wait for surrender requests. It comes after a 41-year-old woman in February was fined $5000 after failing to feed a Chihuahua, Tama — who was not even her pet dog and had followed her home from a park — appropriate food. The woman said she could not afford proper pet food and admitted to feeding him Weetbix, cereal, rice and other leftovers. As a result, Tama was left to starve, weighing just 3.4kg. An RSPCA WA inspector described the pooch as “severely underweight” and said he could see the outline of his spine, pelvis and ribs. Tama has since recovered and been returned to his owner. Just this week, a Cooloongup woman was found guilty of animal cruelty and blamed her financial situation for the death of her pet Rottweiler, Memphis, after he was found “unable to move”, underweight, dehydrated and covered in fleas. She was fined $4000. The 33-year-old owner said she had been feeding Memphis twice a day, but confessed he was not being fed enough because of her “financial constraints”. RSPCA WA inspector Kylie Green said cost-of-living stress meant pet owners had other prioritises. “Cost-of-living pressures have resulted in many people failing to seek vet care or prioritising other things like buying pet food,” she said. “While most of our prosecutions could be classified as neglect ... we have also seen an increase in deliberate cruelty.” RSPCA WA chief executive Ben Cave said he had seen an increase in demand, recording a staggering 7100 animal abuse investigations in 2024 alone. “In terms of cruelty reports, demand has been increasing significantly with incoming calls up 76 per cent between 2016-17 and 2023-24,” he said. “While some people’s financial inability to meet their welfare obligations appears to be having an impact on prosecution numbers, we are also seeing an increase in reports of cruelty as community awareness and sentiment around animal welfare improves.”
