Nationals WA pledge $1m for Albany community tennis centre vision

The Nationals WA have pledged to allocate $1 million to a 16-court community tennis centre at the Centennial Park Sporting Precinct if they win government at the March State election.

In September, City of Albany councillors voted to push ahead with plans for a $4.8 million community tennis centre which would bring together several Albany clubs in a modern facility.

Plans for the community centre include the creation of 16 floodlit gel hard courts and an office to help run events.

The decision came after plans for a larger regional tennis centre at Collingwood Park were scrapped in March, when a feasibility study found the project was expected to cost $21 million.

Nationals WA Albany candidate Delma Baesjou said the Royalties for Regions funding would modernise tennis facilities at Albany’s central sporting precinct.

“This $1m commitment is the first commitment from any party to the project. It paves the way for the Federal Government, the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries and the City of Albany to also commit funds,” she said.
