A black labrador and miniature dachshund lost in the Stirling Range National Park were reunited with their owners by a group of hikers after a 14-hour adventure.

The Mt Trio Bush Camp and Caravan Park resident dogs, Tibby the black labrador and Scooter the miniature dachshund puppy, were reported missing from the camp homestead about 6am on December 30.

Camp host Margot Byrne said she was reunited with her dogs 14 hours later after a group of eight hikers discovered the doggy duo after finishing the 2.6km return climb of Talyuberlup Peak.

After wandering 7km from the camp into the national park, Tibby and Scooter were found together about 8:30 that night.

“We were very worried,” Ms Byrne said.

“It was a very good ending and we are terribly grateful to the hikers.”

The pair’s disappearance attracted attention from people as far as Kalbarri and Broome who knew Tibby from their time camping at Mt Trio.

Ms Byrne said her theory was that Scooter had taken off towards the national park and Tibby had gone with him to keep him safe.

She said their Christmas present to the dogs was a blessing in disguise.

“We had given our dogs Christmas presents, they were brand new dog tags with our phone number on it,” she said.

“It was very good timing. We must have known something.”

Despite being “exhausted”, Tibby and Scooter escaped unscathed from the ordeal and “managed to sprint to dinner”.

Margot and John Byrne run the Mt Trio Bush Camp and Caravan Park, situated on a working farm bordering the Stirling Range National Park.
