Albany RSL’s annual Korean War service at St John’s Anglican Church this year focusing on Battle of Kapyong

Many around the world are unaware that the two Korean countries are technically still at war and have remained so since signing a ceasefire in July 1953.

There is no doubt that the presence of very strong US forces based in Korea, with back-up close by in Japan and Hawaii, are a deterrent to the North Koreans and ensure the fragile “peace” is maintained.

On Sunday, July 26, the Albany RSL will again hold the annual Korean War service at St John’s Anglican Church on York Street, commencing at 2pm.

This year will see a focus on the Battle of Kapyong 1951, with the keynote speaker analysing Korea 1951 versus Korea 2026.

All are welcome to attend.

The Albany RSL is extremely proud of their patriarchs who both served in Korea: Ivan Tilney and Ken Morrison, who served in South Korea after the 1953 ceasefire.

Ivan served as a member of the British Army Engineers and Ken as an Australian Army Paymaster.

Ivan served for seven years in the British Army and immigrated to Australia.

Ken served until 1976.

Both were awarded the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal in 2023 for the 70th anniversary of the 1953 Korean ceasefire.
