The sound of revving engines filled the chilly air of the Albany CBD on Sunday as thousands of car fanatics flooded the block off main streets to watch the 90th year of the Albany Classic.

One of the only “around the houses” style events left in WA, the Classic draws spectators from across the State to the Great Southern for the June long weekend.

Despite some heavy clouds looming above, the showers held off for most of the day and allowed revheads to watch more than 140 drivers compete in relative dryness.

The 20-event program involved classic sports cars, modern sports cars, historic touring cars, tin tops and pre-1960 sports cars racing through a circuit comprising York, Collie and Aberdeen streets, Peels Place and Serpentine Road against the clock.

Those taking a break from the action could peruse the vintage cars on display, feast at the food stalls, enjoy markets and a variety of kids activities.
