Eating Out restaurant review: Two Slices in Scarborough is doing something very right

While I spend at least 50 per cent of my time thinking about my next meal (often while eating the current one), my thoughts rarely go to my next beverage. Sometimes water comes to mind when a headache is trying to nudge in, coffee when three thirtyitis hits particularly hard, wine after a long week, or an OJ the morning after said wines, but never would I fantasise, let alone consider jumping into the car to drive, for one specifically. That was until I had my first try of Two Slices’ pistachio cream iced matcha latte. If we’re going off social media it would be fair to say that its drinks — specifically the pistachio and espresso cream drinks ($10.70 each with oat milk) — are as popular as its sandwiches. After my TikTok was flooded with people filming their gushing reaction to the first sip of their drink — looking a little like a sophisticated adult milkshake — I drove down with a colleague on our lunch break. Two Slices sits off Scarborough Beach Road, walking distance from the ocean, specialising in gourmet sandwiches and now, yummy drinks. Its sandwiches are made fresh to be enjoyed inside, at an outdoor table, by the beach or even at your desk (they travel well). Now we all know that social media is a version of reality, but when it comes to the over-the-top reactions to the drinks, I now believe they’re genuine. The cream is not as thick as a soft serve, but just as smooth, with a good hit of pistachio flavour. I could eat a cup of it on its own, though the aftermath would likely be similar to a toddler post-birthday party, so atop an oat matcha latte is the perfect combo. And it’s not just the drinks that Two Slices is doing very right. The small store also has enviable social media presence and excellent branding, which all would all be pointless if its sandwiches were a flop. Luckily they’re not, they’re up there with the best in Perth. My summer fresh ($21) was as the name promised, deliciously fresh with quality ingredients: a good amount of prosciutto, chunky basil pesto, stracciatella, tomato and rocket. It was one of the sandwiches with flavours that mingle perfectly, but each still speaks for itself, all the way down to the drizzle of good quality olive oil. The Peri (also $21) ordered by my colleague was “like a McChicken and focaccia has a lovechild”, with a great ratio of southern crumbed chicken, peri peri mayonnaise and iceberg lettuce. While $21 is up there when it comes to the price of a sandwich, they were very filling, just half would be enough for some stomachs. So if you’re like me, it was nice to know what my next meal (afternoon tea) would be, and that it would be very good.
