Whether you have an enormous backyard or a small alfresco area, outdoor spaces hold significant importance in new home designs, and never more so than now.

ABC Blinds & Awnings Co-Managing Director Mark Brice said with people spending more time at home these days, there had been an increase in spending on outdoor areas.

“Retail spending in the home has definitely gone up, and this is one area where people are spending their money upgrading,” he said.

“Entertaining around the home is important to people, so they make their space as good as their budget allows.”

Beaumonde Homes General Manager Troy Galante said a mixture of lockdowns and an inability to travel had resulted in people investing more into their home’s outdoor spaces.

“They are having to spend more time at home than previously spent, and it also adds value to the property,” he said.

Mr Brice said there was a variety of items people could integrate in their outdoor zone such as ceiling fans, flooring and furniture.

Popular furniture options include dining tables, outdoor sofas and benches, rugs, hanging planters, televisions, speakers, and rangehoods and built-in fridges for outdoor kitchens.

When choosing finishes for your new home, Mr Brice encouraged a harmonious blend between the indoor and outdoor areas.

“A lot of new homes have the same sort of floor coverings, like tiling, going from indoors to outdoors, creating a seamless transition,” he said. “They also have window systems and bi-fold doors that open up areas completely to become one.”

Mr Brice said outdoor blinds were a good addition to an alfresco area that needed protection from the elements.

“Outdoor blinds allow people to have some control in windy conditions, and you can fully enclose areas if you want to keep insects or bugs out of that space,” he said.

Mr Galante said fire pits were a great additional for year-round entertaining, while swimming pools where the ultimate outdoor accessory.

“Pools are great for kids and the hot summer days,” he said. “They are also likely to add value to the property.

“If there isn’t much space in the backyard, above-ground pools and spas, or plunge pools are ideal.”
