Mercedes-AMG previews electric future with Vision AMG concept

Mercedes-AMG says its Vision AMG concept is a “first glimpse of how we are transferring the AMG DNA into the all-electric future, starting in 2025”.

The electric four-door coupe rides on the upcoming AMG.EA platform, currently in development and designed specifically for electric vehicles.

Mercedes-AMG hasn’t shared any technical specifications for the Vision AMG like its power, torque, range or battery size and chemistry, though it says its drivetrain components have been designed from scratch.

That includes its battery and its Axial Flux Motor, designed by Mercedes-Benz subsidiary YASA, and is said to be more compact and lightweight, and feature “substantially more power” than conventional electric motors.

The company says the Vision AMG is an example of “monolithic sculpture”, and is “not unlike” the earlier Vision EQXX concept with its tapered, teardrop form.

There are the hallmarks of a dedicated electric vehicle design, including a long wheelbase and short overhangs.

The steeply-raked A-pillar, positioned far forward, also gives it a rakish silhouette. There are also some muscular design details, like its prominent shoulders and flared wheel arches.

Up front, there’s a sharply chiselled “shark nose” with a closed-off AMG grille featuring illuminated vertical bars.

The three-pointed star is positioned prominently on the bonnet in a nod to the Mercedes-AMG Project One. The headlights feature three LED elements to form a stylised, three-dimensional mercedes star.

The headlights are in turn connected by a horizontal band of light above the grille, which can display a variety of animations.

The rear and side windows are finished in Alubeam silver to match the car itself, while Mercedes says it has kept joints and shut lines to a minimum.

The Vision AMG’s rear overhang is slightly longer than its front overhang, and is said to be aerodynamically optimised.

It features a distinctive active spoiler, and is framed by a “precisely cut band of light that accommodates a variety of different light installations”.

The round tail lights feature three LED rings positioned in cylindrical tubes, with the presence of small stars yet another nod to the Mercedes logo.

Finishing touches include exposed carbon-fibre exterior elements, aerodynamic-design 22-inch wheels, and AMG sill, diffuser elements and logos finished in the colours of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team.

Mercedes hasn’t confirmed just how aerodynamic the concept is. The Vision EQXX had a drag coefficient of just 0.17, while the production EQS sedan has a drag rating of 0.20.

The company does say the concept sits considerably lower than the EQS, however, though it still offers “plenty” of space for four occupants.

“AMG is reinventing itself,” said Mercedes-AMG CEO Philipp Schiemer.

“As was once the case with our founding fathers, there has been an amazing feeling of new beginnings here in Affalterbach for quite some time now.

“The course has been well and truly set for an electrified future, and we’ve set the bar high.

“With this study, we are now offering a first glimpse of how we are transferring the AMG DNA into the all-electric future, starting in 2025.”

Mercedes-Benz is spending €40 billion ($64 billion) between 2022 and 2030 on EV technology, platforms, and vehicle development as it plans to go EV-only “by the end of the decade, where market conditions allow”.

Last year it announced three dedicated EV architectures: MB.EA for medium to large vehicles; AMG.EA for performance cars; and VAN.EA for, naturally, vans.

All platforms introduced after 2025 will be EV-only.
