Maserati outlays electric plans

Maserati has laid out its future electric model plans, with the Italian brand to introduce its first hybrid model and an fully battery-powered version of its upcoming, all-new mid-engined sports car this year.

First up will be a plug-in hybrid version of the facelifted Ghibli sedan, which will also score increased autonomous driving capabilities.

An all electric-version of its Alfieri supercar is also planned to emerge in 2020, wlong with other hybrid and, potentially, petrol powertrains.

All-new GranTurismo and GranCabrio will also have 100 per cent electric offerings, while petrol models are also predicted to be available.

In 2021, the brand will introduce an all-new SUV to sit beneath the Levante in its line-up

Maserati is investing big money into the transition towards electrification, spending $1.29 billion on a GranCabrio and GranTurismo production hub in Mirafiori, and a similar amount on establishing the new SUV’s production line in Cassino.

Give it built its reputation on howling performance engines, the move to greener technology would seem a challenge for Maserati — even the brand accepts, in typically dramatic fashion, that “the music is changing”.

However, it also stressed all new models will be “100 per cent developed, engineered and built in Italy” and its hybrid and battery systems will still deliver “all the innovation and outstanding performance typical of the brand’s DNA”.
