My Space: Natalie Jayne Interiors founder’s Art Deco home “wild and different”

Have you ever driven down Alexander Drive in Menora and wondered who lives in the historic Breckler mansion? The answer is Natalie Stacey-Conway, founder of Natalie Jayne Interiors, her husband Martin, their daughter and managing director of the business, Isabella, and their adorable bulldog, Ronnie. “I’ve always loved this house and we’ve always lived in the area, so when it came on the market, we knew it had to be ours,” Natalie explains. The 1937 Art Deco abode is captivating. In the dining room, the walls are green with a giant gold alligator statue hanging on the wall, while Natalie’s office walls are covered in Gucci tiger-face print wallpaper. “I like to always move things around and keep it wild and different,” Natalie says. “Every room is something different, has a different style, has a different story. I just choose things that I love and make them work, I think that’s the best way to create a home.” Externally, the home hasn’t been touched, allowing the original Art Deco features to shine. Inside, Natalie has kept many of the original features, including one of the bathrooms, upstairs flooring and the original ballroom stage. “The whole upstairs area was originally a ballroom, which is why the rooms are so big. The bed in the spare room, which used to be my other daughter Stephanie’s room, is actually elevated on a little stage, which was where the piano would go,” Natalie says. Upstairs is Isabella’s pride and joy, with her bedroom and adjoining living areas boasting textured snakeskin wallpaper, pops of colour and large artworks. “Our Bellisimo sofa never gets boring to look at, it’s such a timeless design and I love the soft pink velvet,” Isabella says. “We also have a lot of commissioned art throughout the house that are quirky and interesting. We have lots of animals included in the artwork and they all tell a story and are pieces that you really stop by and look at.” The mother and daughter duo have an artist who works privately for them and their clients, allowing them to create the perfect piece for the home. “I’m always moving the artwork around the house,” Natalie laughs. “If it isn’t the artwork, then I’m moving a light fitting. I don’t think any room in the house is completely finished yet.” Natalie’s love of antiques is on show throughout the home, including her office cushion collection that she has been adding to for nearly 30 years. “I love antique pieces. I think they’re beautiful and have such detail. I’m always mixing the old with the new; it’s something I love to see and I think it adds such character to a home,” Natalie says. The home is styled with an eclectic mix of accessories that the duo source from around the world and their Mt Lawley store. “We have lots of accessories around our home that have such history to them. There’s beautiful Chinese pottery, antique glassware and we have lots of pieces from our store, it’s hard not to bring back pieces from the shop as we choose what we love,” Isabella says.
