A boy has been rushed to hospital after he became trapped under a train in Melbourne.

Emergency services rushed to North Melbourne Station where a boy fell on the tracks and was hit by a train about 3.50pm on Monday.

It was reported the boy was trying to retrieve his mobile phone.

Fire Rescue Victoria received multiple triple-0 calls advising them a boy was trapped under a train.

A spokesman said crews arrived within five minutes to find the boy trapped and worked swiftly to extricate him.

“The patient who was then treated by Ambulance Victoria and transported to hospital,” a FRV spokesman said.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the boy was assessed and treated by intensive care and advanced life support paramedics at the scene.

“A boy with a serious lower body injury was transported by road ambulance to the Royal Children’s Hospital,” a spokesman said.

Paramedic Alex Hemsley told the ABC they transported the young person quickly under emergency conditions — lights and sirens conditions — with a pre-notification to the Royal Children’s Hospital with regards to their injuries.

“(Paramedics) did everything as quickly as they could have done, provided the highest level care to this young person on potentially on one of the most traumatic days of their lives,” she said.

Train lines were closed while emergency services responded to the incident.
