The Mystery Road: Origins series finally hits ABC. Here’s what to expect from the much-anticipated show

Mystery Road: Origin Sunday, 8.30pm, ABC and streaming on iview Mystery Road has been one of the biggest dramas to come out of Australia in recent years. This series, which started last night, revisits the story, but as a prequel. It stars Mark Coles Smith as a young Jay Swan, and looks at how his early days as a detective in a small mining town had a seismic impact on his later life. This stunningly shot six-part series, set in 1999, has a similar feel to its later incarnations, with the same shimmering, mesmeric beauty synonmous with the franchise. Worth a look. True Colours Today, 8.30pm, NITV and SBS Screening as part of NAIDOC Week, this excellent four-part crime drama stars Wentworth’s Rarriwuy Hick as Detective Toni Alma. She returns home to investigate a tragic accident that occurs on the country she grew up in. Set in the fictional Aboriginal community of Perda Theendar in the East MacDonnell Ranges in the Northern Territory, it’s told half in English, half in Arrernte, the language spoken there. Black Sails’ Luke Arnold also stars and they are both terrific. Don’t miss it. Movin to the Country Friday, 7.30pm, ABC In the past two years there has been a huge shift in Australia’s population as more and more of us leave behind the grind of life in the city for a new start in the country. Join host Craig Quartermaine, Halina Baczkowski and Kristy O’Brien as they travel around Australia meeting the people who’ve made the move and are carving out a new place for themselves away from the hustle and bustle. If you love Back Roads, you’ll want to check this out. Get inspired. Nude Tuesday Thursday, streaming on Stan This screened as part of Sydney Film Festival, but is having its TV premiere via Stan — and if you love absurd humour, you will absolutely want to check this out. It’s all about a stitched up couple (Damon Herriman and Jackie van Beek) who head off to a couple’s retreat on a remote island where Flight of the Conchords’ Jermaine Clement is the love guru/cult leader. The film is shot entirely in gibberish, with subtitles added after the fact by comedian Julia Davis — genius. A wacky ride. Black Bird Friday, streaming on Apple TV Plus Taron Egerton stars as Jimmy Keene, a drug dealer staring down a lengthy sentence who is offered a literal ‘get out of jail free’ card if he can extract a confession from a man believed to be a multiple serial killer — he’s already serving time for another murder. The incredible thing about this story is that it’s based on something that actually happened — I had to google it, and believe me, it makes for a ripping tale. One for crime fans.
