Perth’s Supanova convention postponed due to COVID-19 cluster in NSW: ‘This is heartbreaking’
Perth’s Supanova Comic Con and Gaming convention has been postponed due to the growing COVID-19 cluster in New South Wales.
The WA leg of the pop culture event has been postponed due to many of the crew, exhibitors and guest stars being based in NSW, where the current COVID-19 cluster has grown to 11 cases.
It was originally scheduled to take place this weekend.
Despite the WA border remaining open —with new arrivals having to test and isolate until receiving an negative COVID-19 result — organisers still said they “will not physically be able to deliver next weekend’s event”.
“This is heartbreaking for both us, our exhibitors, artisans and our Supa-Stars, who were excited to meet all their West Coast Supa-Fans,” read a statement from Supanova organisers.
“These guests have all confirmed their attendance as long as our new dates don’t conflict with any prior commitments they may have made, so we hope to see them back as soon as possible.”
Home and Away star Lincoln Lewis, Packed to the Rafters actor Georgina Haig, Outlander’s David Berry, Luke Arnold and X-Men actor Kodi Smit McPhee were all due to jet west as keynote guests.
New dates are being finalised in accordance with the event schedule of the venue, Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Home and Away and Black Sails star Arnold shared a video to his Instagram page to announce that he could not attend the Sydney SupaNova this weekend due to the uncertainty in NSW, as he needed to be able to return to the Northern Territory for a job.
Anyone who had already purchased tickets or tokens should begin receiving refunds this morning via Moshtix.
“We’re beyond disappointed to be missing you next weekend, Perth fans, especially with this news coming so close to show,” the statement continued.
Fans flooded Supanova’s Facebook page to express their disappointment at the news.
“Can’t believe that Perth ends up getting punished for what’s happening in a different state. So disappointed,” one user wrote.
“I’ve taken annual leave for this event, I can’t change that or ask for leave again,” another added.
