The daughter of John F. Kennedy has been tapped by US President Joe Biden to become the next US ambassador to Australia.

It’s the second high-profile posting for Caroline Kennedy, who served as the ambassador to Japan in the Obama administration.

In a statement, Ms Kennedy said she looked forward to collaborating with the Australian government.

“I am always grateful to the courageous Solomon Islanders and Australian coast watchers who rescued my father during World War II, and if confirmed, I will work hard to repay this debt,” she said.

“I look forward to collaborating with the government of Australia to strengthen our alliance, improve global health and increase vaccine access during this terrible pandemic and to address the urgent climate crisis.

“I am excited to get to know the Australian people, learn about their fascinating country and share with them what I love most about America.”

Ms Kennedy was in November awarded the Grand Cordon of the Rising Sun, the highest honour for which foreigners are eligible, for her efforts to strengthen the US-Japan alliance.

The diplomat is a long-time ally and friend to the US President. She threw her support behind Mr Biden early in the 2020 democratic primary process, helping pave the way for the former vice president to move into the White House.

Mr Biden also nominated US Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan to serve as his chief envoy to Belize.

The two-time Olympic medallist was also an early supporter of Mr Biden’s White House campaign.

Ms Kwan said she was honoured by the nomination.

“If confirmed, I will be very proud to serve my country,” Ms Kwan said.

“Belize is full of incredible history and culture and has been a tremendous partner to the United States. I look forward to working with the Belizean government on economic issues, to put an end to this pandemic, and to address the root causes of migration.”
